Zero-Knowledge ID (zk-ID)

The first private, blockchain-based KYC system that allows users to verify credentials without exposing personal data.

The Privacy Problem with KYC

Many Web3 applications require Know Your Customer (KYC) verification to comply with regulations. However, this often means uploading sensitive personal documents (like passports and driver's licenses) to centralized third-party services, creating a massive privacy risk and a prime target for data breaches. This practice runs counter to the core ethos of decentralization and user sovereignty.

The zk-ID Solution: Verifiable Credentials without Data Exposure

Zero-Knowledge ID (zk-ID) is a self-sovereign identity system built by Questdriem Echo on XOLIXBlock. It uses Zero-Knowledge Proofs (ZKPs) to allow users to prove facts about themselves without revealing the underlying data.

With zk-ID, you can prove you are over 18 without revealing your birthdate, prove you are from a specific country without revealing your address, or prove you have passed KYC without revealing any of your personal documents to the dApp you are using.

How It Works

  1. **One-Time Verification:** A user completes a standard KYC process one time with a trusted, certified issuer (e.g., a regulated financial institution).
  2. **Credential Issuance:** The issuer does not store the user's data. Instead, they issue a cryptographically signed "Verifiable Credential" to the user's wallet. This credential contains attestations like "isOver18: true" or "country: US".
  3. **Proof Generation:** When a dApp requests verification, the user's wallet uses the credential to generate a Zero-Knowledge Proof. For example, a proof that "isOver18 is true".
  4. **On-Chain Verification:** The dApp sends this small ZKP to a smart contract on XOLIXBlock. The contract can verify the proof is valid and was signed by a trusted issuer, without ever seeing the user's actual age or any other personal data.
  5. **Access Granted:** Once the proof is verified, the dApp grants the user access. The user's privacy is fully preserved.

Key Advantages

  • Total Privacy: Users never have to share their personal information with dApps or third parties.
  • Self-Sovereignty: Users are in complete control of their own identity and data.
  • Enhanced Security: Eliminates the risk of large-scale data breaches from centralized KYC providers.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Allows dApps to meet compliance requirements without sacrificing user privacy.
